mahāmṛtyuṃjaya mantra
Mantra of the Great Conqueror of Death. First encountered in the Rigveda (7.59.12) and repeated in the Taittiriya Samhita of Krishna Yajurveda (1.8.6) in the Rudra Sūkta.
ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम् ।
उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान् मृत्योर्मुक्षीय मा मृतात् ॥
tryambakaṃ yajāmahe sugandhiṃ puṣṭivardhanam ।
urvārukamiva bandhanān mṛtyormukṣīyamāmṛtāt ॥
We worship (yajāmahe) the three-eyed (tryambakaṃ) Lord (Shiva), who is fragrant (sugandhim) and nourishes (puṣṭivardhanam) all beings. May He liberate (mukṣīya) us from the bondage (bandhanān) of worldly attachments (urvārukamiva) and death (mṛtyor), bestowing (mā) upon us the nectar of immortality (amṛtāt).
